Most agencies have a mission statement somewhere. Fewer have a genuine vision. And almost none are using either one to actually run their business. In this episode, we get into why that matters but also what to do about it.

Vision and mission are not the same thing

The terms ‘mission statement’ and ‘vision statement’ get used interchangeably, but we don’t believe they’re the same thing:

Your vision is the long-term aspiration - what you want the business to ultimately become Your mission is how you get there day to day, the work you do and the impact it has.

Both are essential, but they operate on different timeframes and serve different purposes.

So what is the difference?

One of the most common mistakes is building a vision that's really just a financial exit goal - "sell for £2.5m in three years" is a founder's objective, not a shared future that means anything to the people doing the work. A real vision has to resonate with the whole team, not just the shareholders. It answers the question of who you're trying to become, not just what you're trying to earn.

We also look at the broader strategic framework from Gareth’s book Stand Out or Die, which breaks this down into four connected elements: values, purpose, vision, and mission. Together they act as a compass for the business. The problem is that most agencies treat values as something to put on a website or leave in a drawer, rather than as active principles that shape decisions and culture. When all four elements are working together, they give your team a genuine sense of direction — and give you, as the leader, a much clearer basis for the choices you make every day.
